"Collar" At the tips of the outer petals of the flower many protea have a different colour from the rest of the flower. Some protea flowers do not have a collar.
"Beard" This is the interior of the flower that comprises closely packed often woolly stamens. Beards also have a range of colouring that can differ from the petal colour.
"Spoon petalled" This refers to a variety of protea that have petals shaped like a teaspoon with the spoon end being the outer edge of the flower. This type of flower generally opens out wider than the average protea exposing the central stamen.

Protea Almond Buff: An upright shrub with smaller terminal white flowers. Very free flowering. Suited to most well drained soils in full sun. Prune back well each year in late spring. 2m x 1.5m.

Protea Almond Frost: A robust hybrid Protea with grey/green foliage and white flowers with an almond green tone. Flowers sporadically year round with peak flowering in Winter/Spring. Adaptable to a wide range of free draining acidic soils in full sun. Prune well after flowering. 2.5m x 2m.

Protea Aurea Goodwood Red: A select form of the Shuttlecock Protea. Vigorous and hardy upright growth with masses of bright red flowers from late summer to winter. Adaptable to a wide range of garden situations. Prune after flowering. 1.5m x 1.5m

Protea Candy Floss: This is most likely a cross between a Neriifolia and a Queen protea. The flowers are larger but similar in form to a Neriifolia but the foliage is bluish-grey and most similar to a Queen protea. Flowers are candy pink with a black collar. The beard is also candy pink tipped black. Flowers on short but pickable stems from mid winter to early spring.

Protea Clarks Red: [P Repens x P Aurea red forms] Deep red flowers with firm outer petals opening to display red tipped silver/white styles. Flowers produced all year round with the main flush from Mid February to mid May. Plants show an anomaly in the tips in the form of leaf browning which disappears when the flower is at the bud stage. Dense bushy shrub to 2.5m will tolerate -6C and more once established.

Protea Coronata: Tall and rangy type of plant that requires regular shaping. Small green furry leaves, long stems and smallish granny-smith-apple-green flowers. This is a very useful protea for florists as the size and colour of the flower with its white button beard is very versatile with other flowers. 3.5 x 2.5m.

Protea Cynaroides "King Protea": The largest of the protea flowers. Soft silvery pink buds opening to salmon tinted flowers. A truly regal flower - has to be experienced! 2 x 2m, hardy to -5 ° C and enjoys regular hard pruning.

Protea Cyn Artic Ice: White flowering King Protea, the largest of the protea flowers generally produced in Spring. Suitable for coastal areas, frost hardy, enjoys regular hard pruning, prefers full sun and a free draining acid soil. 1.5m x 1.5m.

Protea Fiery Sunset: Magnifica hybrid with large deep red flowers.Free flowering over a long period from late summer to spring. 1.5m

Protea Franciscan Hybrid: Pale greyish blue foliage, flowers are produced on long pickable stems. Flowers are larger than a normal neriifolia and are cream at the base moving up to a soft pink. This is a collar-less protea with the tips of the petals slightly pointed rather than rounded. The beard is quite ginger/orange in colour. An outstandingly attractive bloom. 3 x 2.5m.

Protea Frosted Fire: Produces masses of brilliant rich red flowers with wine centres well displayed above the foliage winter to spring. Compact bushy shrub 1.5-2m. Reasonably frost hardy.

Protea Grandiceps: Slow growing but flowers at 2 years of age. A shorter more rounded bush with round blue/grey foliage. Flowers only on short stems but are a rich reddish/brown colour. Flowers don't open very wide and the beard is a creamy yellow. Petals are individually fringed with small feather like hairs of a brown/ginger colour. 2 x 2m.

Protea Green Ice: Similar to "Limelight" but with a larger less peaked flower and a distinct purple collar. The flower is a pale creamy white with a typical mother-of-pearl sheen. Similar in growth habit to "Pink Ice" with a flower period from autumn through winter. 3 x 3m.

Protea Lepidocarpodendron "Black Mink": A smaller neriifolia like shaped bloom, although more slender. The base of the petals are cream with a slight touch of the palest rose. Has a firm inward covering collar of pure black. An appealing flower for its difference in size, texture and colour. The foliage is of a bluish/green colour with the leaves standing stiffly at right angles to the stem. Like the Neriifolias the Lepidocarpodendron is a fairly easy to please Protea, erect, bushy and strikingly different in its bloom. 2.5 x 1.5m.

Protea Limelight: Neriifolias in South Africa are referred to as the Oleander-leaved Protea due to similarities in the foliage. Limelight is a more sprawling Neriifolia than the Nerii Pinks. At various times shows a more blue/grey tinted foliage. Flowers are a clear lemon/pale green colour with a collar of deep burgundy which ages to chesnut brown. The beard is cream tipped apricot. Flowering from mid-April through to late October. Like all Neriifolias is a very tolerant Protea producing a good picking flower. 2 x 2m.

Protea Magnifica: The Pink Queen has a similar growth habit to the White Queen but perhaps a little more upright. The flowers are slightly larger than the White Queen and open wider. Lovely silvery pink with black tipped petals. Beard is pink with black tip.

Protea Magnifica "Coronet Peak": The White Queen is a very beautiful Protea. An initially sprawling plant that gains a more upright habit with age. Magnifica has the second largest flowers of the Protea family. Pale lemon/creamy/ white blooms with a white central flower mass tipped black/deep purple. Petticoat type lacy outer petals. Flowers early spring till early summer.

Protea Margaret Wattling: This is a smaller growing Protea if you need to conserve space. Foliage is of a blue/green colour and the flower stems are not particularly long although still quite pickable. Flowers are delicate pale greeny lemon and the petals are slightly splayed with black tips. The beard is a strong claret red in colour. 1.5 x 1.5m.

Protea Mini Red: A small rounded shrub producing small reddish flowers sporadically all year round with peak flowering late Winter. Size lends itself to suitability as a container plant. Frost tolerant once established. Open sunny situation in free draining soil is best. Prune to shape in late Spring. 1m x 1m.

Protea Nerifolia Alba: Another Nerifolia bearing white flowers, collared black. Open rounded bush considered to be one of the best cut flowers available. Flowering from autumn to late spring. 2 x 2m.

Protea Nerifolia Ruby: Upright spreading shrub. Long flowering autumn through winter. Deep pink flowers with black tips and apricot centres. Medium frost tolerance, 3 x 2.5m.

Protea Nerifolia Silver Tips: As with Neriifolia Pink this variant is easily grown in average garden conditions. Deep pink outer petals tipped with silver/white and finished off with soft black. The central mass is deep cream/mustard. Upright shrub and hardy to -5 ° C. 2.5 x 3m.

Protea New Moon: Attractive erect tidy shrub with grey-green leaves and creamy white flowers. Flowering autumn to spring. Very good garden feature plant and for cut flowers.Frost tolerant to -3 deg. 2m x 2m

Protea Pink Ice: This is a truly rewarding Protea, producing flowers from early March through till late September. The deep rose pink blooms are etched with silver and are collar-less with a deep burgundy beard. Attractive rounded bush producing an excellent picking flower for both commercial and home garden use. 2.5 x 2.5m.

Protea Pixie: Compact low growing shrub with smaller reddish flowers from autumn to spring. Ideal for shrub borders. Frost hardy once established. 1m x 1.5m

Protea Possum Magic: Medium to large flower heads handsomely flushed and tipped with bright orange-bronze shading to cream at the base and a contrasting rich black centre. Spring flowering. Good for picking and as a garden feature. 2m x 1.5m

Protea Punctata: This is a real beauty. Slightly furry blue/green foliage. A large plant but the flowers are a real treat. Deep shell pink buds that slowly open until the outer petals are flat and central beard fully exposed is a deep gingery orange. P.Punctata looks, at fully open, a little like a dahlia. Smallish flowers not more than 5-6 cm long x 2-4 cm wide. Best kept at a manageable size of around 2 x 2.5m.

Protea Purity: Neriifolia with larger than normal creamy flowers tinged slightly peach, tipped with a black collar and peachy beard. 2 X 2m.

Protea Regal Mink: Another of the laurifolias with a more blue than green leaf. An upright bush attaining a height of 3 metres. Flowers are a silvery pale pink with a maroon collar and deep plum and cream beard. Flowers through winter and spring. 3 x 2.5m.

Protea Repens: One of the earliest cultivated species. Commonly known as the sugar bush due to the amount of nectar held in the flowers - even the outer petals are sticky. The bush is fairly upright with slim green leaves and yellow stems. Flowers pointed in bud, opening to a wide V shape. The central stamens are quite tightly twisted at first and then slowly unravel as the flower ages. 2 x 2m.

Protea Repens Red: Colourful open blooms attractive to nectar feeding birds and insects. Flowers Autumn to late winter. Tolerates a broad range of soils and climate conditions and is generally a reliable garden plant with attractive foliage and a stunning floral display. 2-3m

Protea Roupelliae: Not often found but an extremely useful Protea. Will grow in a wide range of conditions from acid to alkaline soils and cold winters to sub-tropical heat. Vigorous in its growth it can reach up to 8 metres if not controlled with annual pruning. Long stems with lush green foliage and a slightly red margin. Flowers are similar to Eximea in colour and shape although are slightly deeper pink with cream base and a rounded burgundy beard. Flowering through the summer months. 4 x 2.5m.

Protea Scolymacephala: Prefers a sandy free draining soil. A smaller growing variety which is very attractive in bud and flower. Not dissimilar to P.Punctata at its very open stage. P.Scoly is a creamy flower that opens fairly flat with short stems. The bushes become absolutely covered in these little flowers - and is quite a delight. Small needle like foliage and a neatly rounded bush. 1.5 x 1.5m.

Protea Sheila: An attractive hybrid with a tidy compact growth habit. The deep red flowers can be produced all year round with peak flowering being in late winter. Ideal coastal plant. Best in full sun and well drained soils. 1m x 1.5m

Protea Snowcrest: Pink flowers heavily tipped with white fur. Bushy erect growth 2-2.5m, flowering winter to spring.

Protea Susara: Robust shrub with bi-colour pale yellow to pink bracts. Striking bloom from early winter to spring. Moderate frost tolerance. 2 x 1.5m

Protea Sylvia: A hardy medium sized shrub with attractive glaucous blue red veined leaves. Terminal pinkish-red flowers from Autumn to Spring. A tidy easily managed shrub which grows reasonably quickly. Adaptable to a range of well drained soil types. Once established, can tolerate harsh winters and dry summers. Flowers useful for picking. Prune to shape and size after flowering. 2m x 1.5m
